Note for:   John* Endicott,   1739 - 4 MAR 1816          Index
From Memoir of Samuel Endicott:

John Endicott (1739-1816), of the fifth generation from the Governor (w ho stood some six feet, two inches in height), was a man of athletic bui ld and of a strong, sturdy character. After the death of his father in 178 3, he owned the Orchard Farm, where he lived with his seven sons and fi ve daughters until they left home or were married. He was a true sportsm an and had brought up his children to be competent, self-reliant, and accu stomed, as he was, to outdoor life whether on land or sea. At the ti me of the American Revolution, when the Danvers
Company was called out April 19, 1775, John Endicott was out fishing in t he bay and only arrived in Danvers after the Troop, i.e., the Troop of Hor semen, had left for Lexington. He saddled his horse and rode off at on ce to join the Company, but soon came back, as he had not gone far befo re he met the soldiers returning. When only four years old his daughter El izabeth, who lived to be one hundred years, one month and six days old, re membered well how handsome her father looked in his uniform when he left h ome and how many tears her mother shed. Heart and soul in sympathy with t he Colonists in their determination to free themselves from British rul e, he took an active part in the Revolution. In 1778, Washington had direc ted General Sullivan to call upon the New England militia for a campaign a gainst Newport and its defences. Little seems to be known regarding the ex periences of John Endicott in the Revolutionary War except that he w as at Tiverton, Rhode Island, from August until November, 1778.

His wife, Martha (Putnam) Endicott, was "a woman of great purity of charac ter, of blameless life and conversation," and was honoured and rever ed by her children to an extraordinary degree. "By her amiable deportmen t, kindly feelings and gentle bearing she won the esteem of all who knew h er." After her husband's death in 1816, she moved to Salem and lived in t he house of her son Samuel, until her death in 1821.
