Lawrence was probably the one who with wife Elizabeth was named in a 14 61 fine
concerning their lands at Weston, Herts. In 1476 the King (Edward IV) gran ted
to Lawrence Fairclough, one of the marshals of the King's Hall, custo dy of the
park at Weston. The King also "for his good service to the King in all his
victorious conflicts and necessities; that he shall be one of the knigh ts of
the King's alms within the college of St. Mary and St. George within the c astle
of Wyndesore".

EARLDOM OF SALISBURY

I. 1. PATRICK DE SALISBURY, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir, support ed the Empress, who made him her Constable, and by whom he was created, wi thin the years 1142 (June)-1147, and probably after July 1143, EARL OF WIL TSHIRE, being styled usually EARL OF SALISBURY. He was sheriff of Wiltshir e. He was with Henry, Duke of Normandy, at Devizes on 13 April 1149, and a gain in 1153 (January-August); and at Westminster on 6 November 1153 he wi tnessed the treaty between Stephen and Henry. After the accession of Hen ry II, he continued to act as sheriff, and was frequently at Court. In 11 63 he was present at the (first) translation of Edward the Confessor. In 1 166 he held 40 fees inherited from his father, and 15 of his mother's mari tagium, all 55 being of the old fcoffinent. In 1167 he was left in char ge of the royal forces in Poitou. He confirmed his father's gifts to Brade nstoke, and was a benefactor to the priory of St. Denys, Southampton, a nd to the Templars. He married, 1stly, Maud, daughter of . . . . He marrie d, 2ndly, Ela, widow of William DE WARENNE, 3rd EARL OF SURREY, daught er of William TALVAS, COUNT OF PONTHIEU AND ALENÇON, by Ela, daughter of E udes, DUKE OF BURGUNDY. He was killed in battle in Poitou by Geoffrey de L usignan, about 7 April 1168, and was buried in the Abbey of St. Hilai re in Poitiers. His widow died 10 October 1174. [CP 11:376-7]

BARONY OF GREYSTOKE

II. 2. WILLIAM (DE GREYSTOKE), LORD GREYSTOKE, and LORD FITZWILLIAM, son a nd heir, born and baptized at Grimthorpe, 6 January 1370/1. On 1 May 13 42 the King took his homage and he had livery of his father's lands. He w as about to go to Brittany with William de Bohun, Earl of Northampto n, in 1342. In 1344/5 he entailed all, or nearly all, his manors. In 13 45 he was about to go to
Gascony with Ralph, Baron Stafford. On 24 Jan. 1346/7 the King, took his f ealty and he had livery of the lands which Elizabeth late the wife of Robe rt fitz Ralph, his grandfather, had held in dower of his inheritance, h is homage being respited; the King took his homage, 20 August 1347. He w as at the siege of Calais in 1347. He was summoned to a great Counci l, 15 July 1353, and to Parliament from 20 November 1348 to 15 December 13 57, by writs directed Willelmo de Creystok' or (on and after 25 November 1 350, Willelmo Baroni de Greystok'. In October 1351 he was going beyond se as in the company of Henry, Duke of Lancaster. On 5 October 1353 he had li cence to crenellate his dwelling-house of Greystoke. He was appointed a co mmissioner to treat concerning the release of the King of Scots, 15 Octob er 1353, and again 18 June 1354. On 28 September 1354 he was appointed Cap tain of Berwick-on-Tweed, as from Michaelmas following, till Michaelmas 13 55. On 16 February 1357/8 he was pardoned for having, when Captain, withdr awn fmm the town, without the King's orders, in consequence of which the t own was captured by the Scots: because he had left the town only in ord er to accompany the King in his expedition to France and had served throug hout that expedition. He married, 1stly, Lucy, daughter of Sir Antho ny de Lucy, of Cockermouth, Cumberland [LORD Lucy]. She died s.p.m., and w as buried in Neasham Priory. He married, 2ndly, about October 1351, Joa n, daughter of Sir Henry FITZ HENRY "of Ravensworth," by Joan, sister a nd coheir of William DE FOURNEUX, of Carlton in Lindrick, Kingston, and Bo tharnsall, Notts, and Beighton, co. Derby, and younger daughter of Sir Ric hard DE FOURNEUX, of the same. He died 10 July 1359, at Brancepeth, ag ed 38 years, and was buried in Greystoke Church. M.I. His widow's dower w as ordered to be assigned, 8 Octtober 1359, and on 13 November 1363 she h ad livery of the knights' fees and advowsons of her dower, which were assi gned to her by the King. She married, 2ndly (pardon for marrying without r oyal licence, 29 April 1366), Sir Anthony de Lucy knight, of Cockermout h, Cumberland [LORD Lucy], who died 19 August or 16 September 1368, in t he Holy Land. She married, 3rdly, before 6 May 1378, Sir Matthew REDMAN kn ight, of Levens, Westmorland, who died about 1390. She died at Clerkenwel l, 1 September 1403, and was buried there.
