William de Dacre, b. 1265, who, in the 32nd Edward I [1305], was in the ex pedition made that year into Scotland, and about the same period obtain ed a charter for free warren in all his demesne lands at Dacre, co. Cumber land, and at Halton, in Lancashire. In the 1st year of the next reign [130 7], he had license to encastellate his mansion at Dunwalloght, in Cumberla nd, on the marches of Scotland, and in three years afterwards was again en gaged in the Scottish wars. His lordship m. Joane, dau. and heiress of Ben edict Garnet, or according to some authorities, dau. of Sir William Blue t, and having been summoned to parliament as a baron from the 28th Edwa rd I, to the 12th Edward II [1300 to 1319], departed this life in the latt er year, and was s. by his son, Ranulph de Dacre. General Statement of Hoghton family pedigree: The de Hoghtons are of anci ent lineage, descended from Harvey de Walter, one of the companions of Wil liam the Conqueror, and through the female line from the Lady Godiva of Co ventry, wife of Leofric III the Great, Earl of Mercia. After the third ge neration from the Norman Conquest, Richard and William de Hoghton first as sumed the family name around 1150. The great-grandson, Sir Adam de Hoghto n, was knighted and died in 1290.

Sir Richard de Hoghton 1316-1345, Knight of the Shire in the Parliamen ts of 1322-27-37. Married Sybilla de Lea, direct descendant of the Lady G odiva, whose lands in Lea still form part of the Hoghton Estates. Ward en of the Ports, knighted by Edward III in 1336 and given permission to em park in 1327. It was from Lea Hall (his private residence), that Thomas H oghton went into exile in 1569, having re-built Hoghton Tower 1560-1565.

Note: There is a Master Richard de Hoghton 1290-1316, Sheriff of Lancast er 1282, 1291 & 1301 mentioned in the brochure as a predecessor of this Ri chard. May have been an uncle.

This generation is not specifically named in Burke's Peerage, but is impli ed. Many people have this generation being direct ancestor of Richard, b ut Burke's identified Agnes as mother of Richard.
